Roblox, one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world with more than 90 million daily users, is once again facing criticism after reports revealed that players are using a popular game to get around chat filters.
Earlier this year, Roblox updated its system by replacing LegacyChatService with TextChatService. The move was meant to strengthen parental controls and reduce the spread of hate speech. While the change did make it harder for offensive messages to slip through chat, some players have found other ways to spread harmful content.
A CBS News report revealed that Spray Paint!, a Roblox game where players can graffiti walls in a virtual skate park, has become a hub for hate speech. While many players use it for fun art and content creation, others have filled walls and ramps with swastikas, slurs, and offensive references.
This discovery adds to the growing list of issues Roblox is dealing with. The state of Louisiana is currently suing the company for failing to protect children from predatory behavior. With this new controversy, Roblox could face even more scrutiny. The company responded by reminding players that it has a human review team checking flagged content and encouraged the community to continue reporting inappropriate images.
Roblox has also been tightening restrictions. Since November, games rated above “Mild” are blocked for players under nine years old, and those under 13 need parental consent to play “Moderate”-rated games. Still, Spray Paint! is classified as Moderate, meaning teens can access it without restrictions.
Despite these issues, Roblox continues to grow. Its farming simulator Grow a Garden recently surpassed Fortnite in concurrent users, making it the most popular game on the platform to date.
