Meta is rolling out major upgrades to Horizon Worlds, its Roblox-like social platform, with the goal of making the metaverse more appealing to both players and creators. The most significant change is the introduction of the new Horizon Engine, which Meta says will deliver better graphics, faster performance, and the ability to support larger numbers of players in virtual spaces.
To support creators, Meta also unveiled Horizon Studio, a new editor designed to make it easier to build custom VR worlds. Developers can already use generative AI tools to create textures and audio, but Meta plans to add an AI assistant later this year. In a demo shown at Connect 2025, a developer used a chatbot to request changes like adjusting the environment and modifying the personality of an AI-driven character, streamlining the creative process.
Horizon Worlds, which originally launched as a VR-only platform before expanding to mobile, has struggled to gain mainstream traction. Meta is betting that stronger tools and higher-quality visuals will attract more users and developers. Earlier this year, the company also announced a $50 million creator fund to encourage development within Horizon Worlds.
The updates highlight Meta’s continued investment in the metaverse, even as public interest has shifted to AI. By improving graphics, performance, and creator accessibility, Meta hopes Horizon Worlds can finally grow into the vibrant virtual community it has long envisioned.
