Rockstar Shuts Down Ambitious Liberty City Mod for GTA 5

In a recent turn of events, the ambitious Liberty City Preservation Project mod for Grand Theft Auto V has been discontinued. The mod, developed by the team known as World Travel, aimed to bring the iconic Liberty City from GTA IV into the expansive world of GTA V. However, after garnering significant attention, the project has been shelved following discussions with Rockstar Games.

The announcement came through the teamโ€™s Discord channel, where lead modder nkjellman stated, โ€œDue to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation project.โ€ While the specifics of the conversation with Rockstar remain undisclosed, the modding team expressed gratitude for the support received and reaffirmed their passion for modding within the Grand Theft Auto series.

This development has sparked a wave of disappointment among fans who were eagerly anticipating exploring Liberty City within the GTA V engine. Many have taken to social media to express their frustration, criticizing Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, for their stringent stance on modding projects. This incident is reminiscent of previous instances where Take-Two has issued takedown notices against modders, particularly those involving the importation of content from older GTA titles into newer ones.

Itโ€™s worth noting that while Rockstar has historically allowed single-player mods that are non-commercial and respect intellectual property rights, they have consistently opposed mods that incorporate content from other intellectual properties, including their own. This policy aims to protect the integrity of their games and prevent potential impacts on sales of existing titles.

The discontinuation of the Liberty City Preservation Project has reignited discussions within the gaming community about the balance between protecting intellectual property and supporting fan-driven creativity. As the modding community continues to navigate these challenges, many hope for clearer guidelines and more open communication between developers and modders to foster a collaborative environment that benefits both parties.

For now, fans of the Grand Theft Auto series will have to wait and see what future projects emerge from the talented modding community, even as they remain cautious of potential legal hurdles.
