Bungie’s Destiny franchise is officially expanding to mobile with Destiny: Rising, a free-to-play sci-fi RPG shooter launching on iOS and Android on August 28. Developed by NetEase Games, the spinoff sets itself apart with a storyline that unfolds in an alternate timeline—one that exists before the events of the mainline Destiny games.
The new mobile title was first revealed in October 2024 and is the result of a long-standing partnership between Bungie and NetEase, which began with a $100 million investment in 2018. Now, nearly a year after limited playtests rolled out to select regions, Destiny: Rising is ready for a full global launch, with pre-registration now open via Google Play and the App Store.
A gameplay trailer released this week reveals expansive PvE missions, co-op strikes, and competitive multiplayer battles, all optimized for mobile controls and visual fidelity. Players will take on the role of a customizable Lightbearer named Wolf or fight alongside well-known characters from the Destiny universe, including Ikora Rey and Iron Lord Jolder.
NetEase says the game is designed to welcome newcomers without requiring prior Destiny experience. Set in a prequel-like alternate universe, Destiny: Rising offers a separate narrative foundation while retaining key Destiny lore and mechanics. This mobile version still incorporates signature Destiny features such as customizable Primary and Power weapons, gear sharing between characters, and a new Mythic-tier loot category.
A new weapon class is also being introduced, expanding the game’s loadout flexibility alongside familiar Destiny staples like Supers and gear mods. While the visuals and moment-to-moment action have been adapted for mobile devices, the gameplay remains rooted in the RPG-shooter hybrid model that defines the Destiny franchise.
NetEase has confirmed that Destiny: Rising will support single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer at launch. The game also includes a progression system tied to events and seasonal content, mirroring Destiny’s live-service approach.
Ahead of launch, NetEase is holding a pre-registration campaign where players can earn exclusive cosmetic items and in-game bonuses. The more players who sign up globally, the more milestone rewards will be unlocked for all.
With its August 28 release date falling just a month after Bungie’s major Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, the franchise is poised to extend its reach with a mobile-first experience that appeals both to veterans and new players. It also enters a growing field of mobile shooters like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Apex Legends Mobile, and NetEase’s own Marvel Rivals.
Whether Destiny: Rising will stand out in a crowded mobile market remains to be seen, but with Bungie’s lore and NetEase’s mobile development pedigree, it’s already one of the most anticipated mobile releases of the year.
