Colleges offering Game Development courses in the Philippines

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has opened the doors for colleges to offer Game Development courses and a few heeded the call. Without further ado, these are some of the country’s top schools offering Game Development courses.

Creating playable masterpieces are no feat and require a lot of dedication, hard work, and passion to succeed. Luckily, these schools offer a ladderized way to reach those game development dreams. These are some of the schools that offer Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Multimedia Computing, or similar Game Development courses.

Asia Pacific College (Makati)

The Asia Pacific College offers a four-year trimestral BS-EMC course that builds on its strong game art experience with the School of Multimedia Arts and incorporates this to School of Computer Science and Information Technology’s method of iterative prototyping. They call this as “Agile Development,” and harnesses Project-Based Learning (PBL) model where theories and concepts are blended with application-oriented laboratory exercises and project experiences.

CIIT College of Arts and Technology (Quezon City)

CIIT began with offering a two-year game development which became a full four-year college course known as Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Multimedia Computing (BS-EMC) in 2015. The school is no stranger to game development itself as its chairman, Niel Dagondon, founded Anino Games — the country’s first game development firm.

Colegio de San Juan de Letran (Laguna)

Letran’s Calamba campus offers Game Development as part of its Bachelor of Science offerings and may take three to five years to finish according to its website.

De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (Manila)

De La Salle’s smaller College of Saint Benilde in Manila offers a plethora of art and science courses, not to mention its Bachelor of Science in Interactive Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSIEMC) degree which gives you gaming and design knowledge, as well as basic fundamentals in creating interactive applications across different platforms.

De La Salle University (Laguna)

DLSU is the latest to offer the Game Development course, and it didn’t come without anything in its sleeve as the school system partnered with Ubisoft to offer a 4-year Game Development programs. Although students have the option of taking the first two years of the course at the Manila campus before continuing the remaining years at Laguna. The school will start with the new degrees by the 2018-2019 academic year.

FEU Institute of Technology (Manila)

Far Eastern University offers a lot of courses in its campuses, and its Institute of Technology in Manila is getting a lot of attention due to the variety of multimedia and computer sciences courses one could take. The school’s own four-year Game Development program, according to its website, is designed to provide students with a methodological and systematic knowledge of the concepts, preproduction, production and testing stages of the information and technology resources and services, as well as different theories, examples, and practices of gaming environment and 3D animation.

 

iAcademy (Makati)

Like CIIT, iAcademy also offers its own BS-EMC undergraduate course and offers to teach fundamentals in programming and design to enhance storytelling and create better visualizations across gaming platforms.

Mapua University (Makati)

Mapua recently added BS-EMC specializing in Game Development to its portfolio of courses and has been offered since AY 2016-2017. The coursework requires three years and three months of school work in 178 units.

University of the East (Manila)

UE started offering its BS-EMC Game Dev course as early as 2012 and is said to be available only at the Manila campus.

Update, January 25, 2018: This article originally mentioned that DLSU’s Game Development course is a 2-year program. DLSU’s College of Computer Studies clarified that this is a 4-year course, which allows students to take their first 2 years in the Manila campus but will transfer to the Laguna campus for their remaining 2 years. We have updated the article with the new information.
