Electronic Arts (EA) and Respawn Entertainment has released Apex Legends, a free-to-play Battle Royale shooter game. Apex Legends features a Jumpmaster system where teams choose their drop off point before a match, Respawn Beacons where defeated teammates can be revived in a one-time use location, and a Ping communication system where players can call out to their opponents, weapons, locations, and the like. Apex Legends will follow a seasonal model, releasing new content such as skins, weapons, Legends and more with each themed season. Ubisoft appears to be gearing up for a major return to the battle royale arena with a new project that’s reportedly heavily inspired by Apex Legends. According to early sources, Project Scout is Ubisoft’s ambitious attempt to craft a hero-based battle royale shooter, featuring a playable roster of characters with distinct abilities—much like Apex Legends. While Apex Legends continues to maintain a strong player base, there’s chatter about a gradual decline in its momentum, and Ubisoft seems ready to fill that potential gap. The game’s internal development has been discreet, but the similarities to Apex Legends have reportedly been so close that placeholder art from Apex was even used during early stages.
