Sony elaborates details on backward compatibility of PlayStation 5

Sony has provided a summary of the details regarding the backward compatibility of PlayStation 5.

Sony clarified that more than 99% of PS4 games would be playable on the new PS5, including The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima.

It also mentioned that both models’ gaming experience will be the same but will differ on how users can access the content to play.

For the PS5 Digital Edition console, users can play digital versions of compatible PS4 games. This is also compatible with PS4 digital games that have already been purchased or plan to purchase through the PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web, or via PlayStation mobile app. However, users won’t play their PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition since it has no disc drive.

As for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, users may get to play the digital versions of compatible PS4 games downloaded from the PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web, or PlayStation mobile app. Users can also use physical PS4 game discs. After signing in to PS5 with the user’s account for PlayStation Network, they will automatically see the library of played PS4 content on the menu. The PS5 console must be updated to the latest system software update available and apply all available game patches to the game.

Moreover, Sony also mentioned that PS4 titles will get even better on PS5 with increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also power Game Boost, giving out improved or more stable frame rates. Even so, some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may get to see higher fidelity. More than that, PS4 games will also benefit some of PS5’s new UX features.

PlayStation VR games are also part of the thousands of PS4 games that can be played on the new PS5. It requires a PS VR headset, DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controllers, and PS Camera for PS4 sold separately from the PS5 console. Although, the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5.

Backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now can also run on PS5. Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PS Now streaming are also supported.

Games that can only be played on PS4 will be marked on PlayStation Store as playable on “PS4 only.” PS4-only games include DWVR, Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2, Deal With It!, Shadow Complex Remastered, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, Shadwen, and Joe’s Diner.
