In a surprise update, Naughty Dog has released a new Chronological Experience mode for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, offering fans a fresh way to revisit the game’s emotionally intense narrative. Available now for PlayStation 5 and PC, the mode allows players to experience the story in strict chronological order rather than the original non-linear format. However, the studio strongly advises first-time players not to use it.

According to Naughty Dog, the original timeline, with its back-and-forth storytelling, was an intentional and integral part of how the studio wanted to communicate themes of trauma, revenge, and empathy. While the Chronological Experience is positioned as an exciting new way to dive deeper into the narrative, it’s clear the developers see it as supplemental rather than definitive.

“We believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative,” said Jonathon Dornbush of Naughty Dog. “Seeing moments like Ellie being gifted the guitar flow directly into her learning to play, or watching the overlap in Abby and Ellie’s paths throughout Seattle, brings new perspective. You’ll understand how closely their journeys mirror and affect each other.”

The update arrives just days after news broke that Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the franchise, will not be involved in the third season of HBO’s The Last of Us. It also comes on the heels of a mixed reception to Season 2 of the show, which adapts the events of Part II.

Chronological Mode was developed in partnership with Nixxes Software, known for their PC porting expertise. It not only changes the order of cutscenes and gameplay sequences but also includes new PlayStation trophies and bonus content. Players can unlock additional outfits, including an Easter egg-style skin for Joel dressed as Nathan Drake from Uncharted, and another for Tommy dressed as Sam Drake.

The new mode is accessible through the main menu of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and can be selected after updating the game. This update also includes various bug fixes and performance improvements, aiming to polish the overall gameplay experience.

Fan reactions have been largely positive, with many expressing interest in how the new format alters their emotional response to key scenes. However, some have echoed Naughty Dog’s own warnings, reminding newcomers that the original timeline’s fragmented structure plays a crucial role in the story’s pacing and impact.

Since its original release in 2020, The Last of Us Part II has remained one of the most talked-about and debated games of its generation. With this new mode, Naughty Dog offers longtime fans a new lens through which to view its complex characters and story arcs—without altering the core experience for new players.

The Chronological Experience is now live as a free update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5 and PC, bringing fresh rewards and new ways to reflect on the brutal and beautiful journey of Ellie and Abby.
