Roblox to Use Video Selfies to Help Verify Players’ Ages

Roblox is making big changes to help keep its younger players safe. The platform will soon start using video selfies to check a player’s age.

Roblox is one of the most popular games in the world, especially among kids and teens. Because of this, the company has been working on ways to stop online dangers like abuse and scams. One of its newest tools is an “age estimation” system, which asks players to take a short video selfie. This will help confirm how old they are without needing to upload an ID.

This new step is part of Roblox’s updated safety features. The company is adding a new system called “Connections,” which comes in two types: normal and “Trusted Connections.” Trusted Connections let players chat more freely, including with voice and unfiltered text, but both players must prove their age first.

Players between 13 and 17 can become Trusted Connections with each other once they verify their age using either an ID or a video selfie. If someone under 18 wants to connect with an adult, they must prove that they know the person in real life by scanning a QR code or sharing a contact list. Children under 13 are not allowed to use this feature at all.

Roblox says that all video data will be handled securely, but exact details on privacy were not shared.

This change comes at a time when Roblox is under pressure to better protect its younger users. While the platform recently broke records for most players online at once, experts still warn that it needs stronger tools to fight online risks, especially for children.
