E3 was originally canceled in 2020 due to COVID concerns. They had then held a fully online event in 2021 but had called off any plans for an event this 2022. According to The Washington Post, the organizing body behind E3, the Entertainment Software Association, has said that both an in-person and digital event will be making its way back in 2023.

With increasing pressure from other gaming events such as Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and other publisher-specific showcases by Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and the like having announcements at their own timing. E3 now faces competition that offers more affordable solutions for developers and loosens up the need for games to compete for the attention at in-person events.

“We’re excited about coming back in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” – Stan Pierre-Louis, ESA Persident and CEO

That being said, Pierre-Louis also stated that there is a place for doing things in person with people having that desire to convene and connect. He further stated that hosting E3 in 2023 both digitally and in person would help companies of all sizes figure out what works best for them in promoting their content and product.

No official announcement has been made thus far as to when E3 2023 would be held.
