After six years of silence, delays, and growing fan anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally has a release date. Indie developer Team Cherry has confirmed that the long-awaited sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight will launch on September 4, 2025.
Originally announced in 2019, Silksong became one of the most talked-about games in the indie scene, often trending alongside big titles like Grand Theft Auto VI. What started as a DLC idea for the original game grew into a full sequel, with development taking far longer than expected. Fans have waited years without updates, turning the game into something of a legend in the gaming community.
The new game puts players in control of Hornet, a key character from the original, who finds herself trapped in the haunted kingdom of Pharloom. The story follows her escape and journey to reach the kingdom’s peak, with new enemies, abilities, and environments to explore.
The game will be released across a wide range of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. It will also be available on macOS and Linux. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play it on launch day at no extra cost.
Team Cherry says the long development time was not due to setbacks, but because they wanted to deliver something polished and worthy of the original game’s success. Despite the wait, the game is now complete and ready to launch worldwide.
Hollow Knight was first released in 2017 and quickly earned critical praise for its detailed art style, challenging gameplay, and deep world-building. It became one of the most celebrated indie games of its generation, and Silksong has had big shoes to fill ever since its reveal.
Since the announcement, fans have watched every major gaming event hoping for updates. The sequel’s absence became a recurring joke in the community, as multiple expected release windows came and went. But now, with the September 4 date confirmed, the wait is nearly over.
The release was revealed during this week’s Gamescom event, along with a new gameplay trailer that gave players another look at the new setting, combat moves, and characters. The footage confirmed that Silksong remains true to the original’s style, with fast-paced action, a haunting soundtrack, and tight platforming mechanics.
Team Cherry has also hinted at post-launch content, which could add even more depth to the game after release. Just like the original, Silksong is expected to offer a high level of challenge and secrets for players to uncover.
With less than a month left before release, Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally within reach. For fans who have been waiting since 2019, the journey is almost over.
