The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is gearing up for an exciting season 2 of the PBA Esports Bakbakan Dota 2 tournament, happening from October 24 to November 22. Once again, they’re teaming up with Dark League Studio, promising thrilling action for both basketball and esports fans.

Right now, registrations and qualifiers are in full swing nationwide, and only the Top 12 teams will earn their spots in the main tournament. What’s unique this year is that these teams will get to choose which PBA franchise they want to represent based on their final rankings. This format not only ramps up the competitive spirit but also strengthens the bond between traditional sports and esports.

This tournament isn’t just about competition; it’s also about showcasing some of the best PBA talent in the gaming world. Leading the charge is June Mar Fajardo from San Miguel, a beloved basketball star and dedicated gamer. He’ll be joined by other PBA athletes like Kamron Vigan-Fleming (Converge), Jayson David (Barangay Ginebra), Barkley Eboña (TNT Tropang Giga), Fran Yu (NorthPort), Jake Pascual (NLEX), Jaydee Tungcab (Blackwater), Nick Demusis (Rain or Shine), Kai Ballungay (Phoenix), Paolo Hernandez (Terrafirma), Alvin Pasaol (Meralco), and Jerrick Ahanmisi (Magnolia). This impressive lineup is a testament to how these players are not just talented on the court but also in the gaming arena.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial is excited about the impact of the tournament, emphasizing its benefits for both the PBA and the esports community. “It’s a win-win situation,” he said. “With our PBA players involved, we’re showing real support for our teams in the PBA Esports. Plus, the PBA brand will help draw in more fans from both sides.” AC Valdenor, co-founder and CEO of Dark League Studios, echoed this sentiment, pointing out how this event bridges the gap between traditional sports and esports.

Interestingly, the designated PBA players have the flexibility to choose whether to play as starters or reserve players for their esports teams. This strategic element adds an exciting twist, keeping fans engaged as they watch their favorite basketball stars navigate the gaming world.

How to Join the Action

The tournament is open to aspiring amateur Dota 2 players aged 16 and older, making it accessible for a wide range of participants. The grand finals, set for November 22, will see these players competing for a significant prize pool of P500,000. However, to ensure fair competition, professional players who compete internationally or in local tournaments are not allowed to join.

The PBA Esports Bakbakan is part of a broader trend where traditional sports leagues are embracing esports. This not only diversifies their fan base but also creates new opportunities for players to engage with fans in exciting and innovative ways.

As the tournament draws closer, the excitement is palpable. Fans are eager to see how their favorite PBA players will perform in this competitive landscape. With its unique mix of basketball and gaming, the PBA Esports Bakbakan promises to be an unforgettable event that unites fans from both worlds.

With qualifiers underway and the main event just around the corner, the PBA Esports Bakbakan is poised to make a splash in both the esports and basketball communities. As fans prepare for what is sure to be an exhilarating tournament, it’s clear that the future of sports and esports is looking bright and full of potential.
