Why are Life Simulator Games so addictive?

With Animal Crossing: New Horizons just recently released, I keep wondering how “simple” games like these could be so hyped up this much. For example, how could people spend so much time playing Harvest Moon or The Sims games, which are the same game all over again?

I’m also puzzled by the fact that I can’t stop playing these games. They’re just so addictive. There was this one time when Sims 4 was free on Origin for a few weeks. I rarely left home for months, and all I did was practically made my character sleep, poop, take a shower and eat which I can do in real life anyway.

So I asked a few of my friends, both hardcore and casual gamers, and came up with a short hypotheses on we can’t get enough of these games.

Living life with Pause and Restart buttons

Made a bad decision in life that you so badly want to correct? Well in these games, you can! It feels good to be able to fix those dreaded mistakes, or relieve an important moment again, or to be able to pause when things get way too complicated. Life simulators grant you these abilities that you just wish you had in real life.

Reaching your dreams faster

Chasing after your passion is hard. It is a known fact that this takes a whole lifetime to accomplish this, and sometimes you don’t even “get there” because, in this life, nothing is reserved. But in life simulators, you could get to a CEO position within weeks by just following simple instructions, which real life, of course, doesn’t come with.

A change in life

Have you felt so overwhelmed with the reality that you wish you could just live a simple life? Games like Animal Crossing grant you to live a calm life, where everyone just nice and welcoming. And with Sims, you can change your career with just a few clicks.

Let’s get one thing straight, life is tough for everybody, no matter which part of the world you are in. But despite its harsh waves of disappointments, we still have to carry on living. Life simulation games offer us not only an escape, but also a potential look into what we want our lives to be like. It may not be a literal representation of our dreams, but possibly abstract concepts such as excitement, success, and settling down.

As Forrest Gump’s mother once said, ” life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” So with that, I hope you guys live with fulfillment and get to follow your dreams. Happy gaming!
