Microsoft’s Xbox App Update Aims to Integrate Steam and Epic Games Libraries

Microsoft is reportedly developing an update for its Xbox app that will allow users to view and access their game libraries from platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. This initiative seeks to create a unified gaming experience across various platforms.

The development came to light when Microsoft briefly published a blog post titled “Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox,” which included an image of a new Xbox user interface (UI). The mockup displayed a “Steam” tab within the game library, suggesting potential integration of third-party platforms into the Xbox ecosystem. The image was subsequently removed after media inquiries.

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans indicate that the company is in the early stages of updating the Xbox app to display all games installed on a user’s PC, regardless of the platform they were purchased from. This approach mirrors functionalities found in applications like GOG Galaxy, which aggregate game libraries from multiple platforms.

This move aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to unify the Xbox and Windows platforms, enhancing cross-platform play and accessibility. By integrating third-party game libraries, Microsoft aims to position the Xbox app as a central hub for PC gaming, simplifying the user experience.

While the update is still under development and may undergo changes before its official release, it represents a significant step toward a more cohesive gaming ecosystem. Gamers can anticipate a more streamlined experience, with easier access to their diverse game libraries through a single application.
