Final Fantasy and Magic the Gathering. A few years ago, no one would usually put the two together in one sentence. However, a teaser from 2023 confirmed the collaboration between two giant franchises was indeed happening. The hype? A lot, and it is arguably one of the most anticipated sets to come out from MTG.
Now, it’s finally here, and we get to see the official Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set. We won’t be surprised if it’s sold out everywhere. But whether you’re a Final Fantasy fan, a MTG fan, or even both – is it worth the hype (and maybe the premium)?
Well, we just got the Magic the Gather Final Fantasy set – from booster packs to commander decks, and let’s find out.
If there’s one good thing about the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set, it’s that you have a lot of options to choose from. This isn’t a simple collaboration featuring just a booster deck, though. There are a lot of You can pick up commander decks, bundles, booster and more to get you started on your MTG journey.
Considering that there are currently 16 Final Fantasy games, most of the main cast members from each game do get their own card. Some of the more popular characters even have their own commander decks each having 100 cards inside.
There are four commander decks you can choose from – Revival Trance featuring Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Limit Break featuring Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Counter Blitz featuring Tidus from Final Fantasy X, and Scions & Spellcraft featuring Y’shtola from Final Fantasy XIV.
Depending on which commander deck you pick, the cards also match the game of the commander. So for example you get Terra deck, all of the cards will be themed after the game too.
If you love collecting cards, then there’s also the Collector’s Edition Commander Deck available. Same set of cards as the standard, but all of the cards are surge foil. For reference, the standard commander deck only features the two commander cards as traditional foil, while the rest are non-foil.
The prebuilt commander decks are a bit limited for choice in my opinion. As a big Final Fantasy fan, I do wish they added more like Squall from Final Fantasy VIII or even Zidane from Final Fantasy IX. If you are looking for the main characters from other Final Fantasy games, you will have to try your luck on the booster packs.
Perhaps the best for someone dipping their toes into the world of Magic the Gathering would be the Starter Bundle featuring Cloud and Sephiroth decks. It comes with two everything you need to be able to play immediately – from the mat to the dice and even a manual.
We also got the pre-release pack which features the dice and a manual. There are also 6 Final Fantasy boosters inside, to help build your deck. I also like how the box itself has these amazing designs, which made us very hesitant to throw them away after opening.
As for the cards themselves, the design is amazing. Magic the Gathering did a great job recreating the characters and events from Final Fantasy.
The style might be a bit more westernized as compared to the design we’re used to, especially for the likes of Cloud and Tidus. However, I do find it nice overall. In fact, I could just frame these and call it a day if ever I stop playing MTG.
With that, you can get these cards if you plan on collecting cards to show off. There’s no doubt it would easily match the rest of your Final Fantasy collection.
Considering how popular the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set has been, I hope fans of both series will be able to get their hands on the decks easily in stores nationwide.
Even if you’re just a fan of Final Fantasy, the decks, boosters and sets here are great ways to start your Magic the Gathering journey if you’ve been curious for a long time.
