Sony has just unveiled the design for their next-generation VR headset, the PlayStation VR2.
The new device will exclusively work with the PlayStation 5 and will also come with the new VR controller called the PlayStation VR2 Sense. According to Sony the PS VR2 was inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products. It features a new lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view.
The PS VR2 is said to be able to run games at 4K HDR quality, and has new features such as inside-out camera tracking and a new Sense Technology that features headset feedback.
“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.” says Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director, SIE
The PS VR2 is also slimmer in design and is lighter than the previous model, even with added technology such as a new built-in motor for the headset feedback. There is also a new vent design that Sony says users will enjoy.
The PS VR2 can also be set up by just using a single cable. The PS VR2 development kits are now with game creators according to Sony and they are excited as to what creators can do.
Sony is targeting a launch of Late 2022 or 2023 for the PlayStation VR2 so stay tuned for more updates.
