Minecraft will soon require Minecraft players to sign in with a Microsoft account by 2021, including those with the Minecraft Java Edition.
As Minecraft posted on its blog, the new policy will increase the security of the player’s account with two-factor authentication. All PC Minecraft games and progress will be connected to the same account. Since the initiative is mandatory, players won’t be able to play Minecraft without logging in on their Microsoft account.
Among other features that offer with the migration from Mojang to Microsoft account include improved parental controls to help keep kids safe when playing online and chat and invitation blocking.
The move will allow players to create and use mods and skins while keeping the existing ones, play with friends on Java servers regardless of the version, and keep the Minecraft Java username. Newbies will still get to choose their Minecraft username. Those who will migrate their accounts will receive a special cape as a reward once they logged in with their Microsoft account.
The new policy will be effective in early 2021. Batches will move players to Microsoft accounts. They’ll be notified via email and will receive instructions on how to move their account. Once they use a Microsoft account to log in to Minecraft, they’ll never be able to log in to their Mojang account.
