Sony is doubling down on its commitment to single-player gaming, with plans to release a major new title each year starting in 2025. This announcement was made by Sony Interactive Entertainment Chairman Hiroki Totoki during the company’s recent financial results presentation. The ambitious strategy highlights the success of Sony’s first-party studios, including powerhouse names like Naughty Dog (The Last of Us), Guerrilla Games (Horizon), Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima), Insomniac Games (Spider-Man), and Santa Monica Studio (God of War).

Totoki revealed that the company plans to keep the momentum going with a consistent stream of major single-player titles. “Starting with Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, we aim to release a significant single-player game every year beginning with the next fiscal year,” he said.

This new roadmap isn’t a huge departure from Sony’s current release schedule. The company has already established a solid track record of annual major game releases. In 2020, we saw Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, followed by Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in 2021, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarök in 2022, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023. While 2024 doesn’t feature a major first-party title yet, Until Dawn, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade are expected to fill that gap, alongside other noteworthy releases from Sony’s publishing arm.

What’s still unclear is whether Totoki is referring exclusively to first-party Sony studios or if third-party collaborations will also factor into this plan. Notably, Death Stranding 2, the highly anticipated sequel from Kojima Productions, is slated for release next year under Sony’s publishing umbrella, but Kojima Productions operates independently. Given that Totoki specifically mentioned Ghost of Yōtei and not Death Stranding 2, it seems likely that this strategy focuses on Sony’s first-party studios.

Ghost of Yōtei

As for Ghost of Yōtei, the upcoming sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, it’s set in Hokkaido in 1603 and will feature new gameplay mechanics. Players will step into the role of “The Ghost” Atsu, with Sucker Punch promising more player agency in shaping the game’s narrative. If the success of Ghost of Tsushima is any indication, Ghost of Yōtei is poised to be another blockbuster hit for Sony.

With these plans, Sony is setting the stage for an exciting future for PlayStation fans, ensuring that there will always be a highly anticipated single-player adventure on the horizon for years to come.
