Nintendo’s New Gadget Isn’t the Switch 2—It’s a Smart Alarm Clock

Nintendo has surprised fans yet again, but this time it’s not a new console like the much-anticipated Switch 2. Instead, the gaming giant has unveiled a quirky new product: a smart alarm clock. Known as the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, this $100 device is set to release in early 2025, offering a unique twist on the usual wake-up routine.

While Nintendo is famous for its innovative consoles and games, the Alarmo fits right into their catalog of unconventional gadgets, like the Labo VR headset. The bright red clock has a classic Nintendo aesthetic, resembling Mario’s color scheme with a large white button at the top. What sets the Alarmo apart from other clocks is its motion sensor, which tracks when you’re in bed and when you get up. Instead of just pressing the snooze button, the alarm will keep ringing until you physically leave the bed. For those who prefer a more traditional alarm, there’s also a classic mode where you can turn it off with a tap.

In addition to waking you up, the Alarmo also monitors your movements while you sleep, providing detailed feedback called a “Record” on how much you toss and turn.

This sleep-tracking feature is made possible by technology that Nintendo has been developing for some time. In a recent interview with Alarmo producer Yosuke Tamori, he explained how the product was born from existing research. According to Tamori, the motion sensor is privacy-focused, as it doesn’t use a camera to monitor your movements—making it ideal for use in the bedroom.

The development team experimented with various designs, even considering using hand gestures to control the clock, but they eventually settled on the simpler, sensor-based approach. A glimpse into the design process also revealed early prototypes, one resembling a blue watch face and another looking similar to an Amazon Echo.

For added fun, Nintendo fans will be able to customize the Alarmo with 35 scenes and soundtracks from popular games like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4, and even Ring Fit Adventure.
