Microsoft has finally rolled out its long-awaited “Stream Your Own Game” feature for Xbox Cloud Gaming, giving players the ability to buy and stream select games directly from the cloud. After years of teasing the feature, the initial wave of this update brings 50 titles to Xbox.com/play and compatible devices, marking a significant step forward for the platform.
Previously, Xbox Cloud Gaming was limited to titles available through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Now, players can purchase games independently and access them on any supported device. This update mirrors services like NVIDIA GeForce Now, enhancing accessibility and giving players more flexibility to enjoy their favorite titles without needing powerful hardware.
Among the first batch of games are blockbuster titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Mortal Kombat 1. Classic entries like Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remasters, Hades, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are also part of the lineup. The update supports various platforms, including web browsers, Meta Quest VR headsets, Amazon Fire Stick, and select Samsung TVs. Compatibility with the Xbox app for PC and Xbox consoles is expected to arrive in early 2025.

While the update is a leap forward, Microsoft faces challenges in expanding its ecosystem. The company announced that its Xbox Cloud Gaming apps on Android will no longer receive updates. This decision stems from Google’s gatekeeping policies on its Play Store, which prohibit apps enabling users to buy games outside Google’s payment system. Currently, the cloud gaming experience is available through browsers at Xbox.com/play.
Microsoft’s advancements in Xbox Cloud Gaming reflect its vision for a more inclusive gaming ecosystem. The new feature provides a significant incentive for players who want to experience high-quality games without owning high-end consoles or PCs. With further updates and device support on the horizon, the future looks promising for Xbox Cloud Gaming and its growing library of buy-to-own titles.
