Warner Bros. Cancels Wonder Woman Game, Shuts Down Three Studios Amid Restructuring

Warner Bros. Discovery is making drastic cuts to its gaming division, canceling the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game and shutting down three of its studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This decision comes as part of the company’s strategic shift toward focusing on key franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.

Monolith Productions, known for its work on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, had been developing the Wonder Woman game since its announcement in 2021. However, Warner Bros. has now confirmed that the project is being scrapped, citing its inability to align with the company’s new priorities.

Player First Games, the studio behind MultiVersus, will also be closing, further highlighting the challenges WB Games has faced. The fighting game featuring WB’s iconic characters has struggled through a rough development cycle, including a long hiatus and an underwhelming relaunch. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Games San Diego, which has worked on various multiplayer projects, is also being shut down.

A statement from Warner Bros. Games emphasized that the decision is “not a reflection of the talent within these teams” but rather a strategic move to return the gaming division to profitability in 2025 and beyond. However, the gaming division’s financial struggles have been significant, with reports indicating that WB’s gaming sector lost $300 million in 2024 alone.

These shutdowns mark another rough chapter for WB Games, following the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which struggled with poor player reception and is already seeing support scaled back less than a year after launch.

On the brighter side, Hogwarts Legacy remains a major success for Warner Bros., and the company is reportedly working on a definitive edition featuring expanded content. This suggests that the company’s gaming focus may shift more toward franchises with proven profitability rather than risky new projects.

As WB continues restructuring its gaming division, the industry watches closely to see what direction the company will take next.
