Nvidia Warns of RTX 5090 & 5080 Shortages as Demand Surges Ahead of Launch

Nvidia’s latest powerhouse graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, are set to hit the market on January 30, 2025. However, the company has cautioned that these GPUs may be hard to come by due to overwhelming demand. Nvidia has stated, “We expect significant demand for the GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 and believe stock-outs may happen.”

The RTX 5090, priced at $1,999, boasts a 30% performance increase over its predecessor, the RTX 4090, making it a coveted upgrade for gamers seeking top-tier performance. The RTX 5080, at $999, offers substantial power at a more accessible price point.

Anticipation for these releases has led to gamers camping outside retailers like Micro Center days in advance, hoping to secure a unit on launch day. Despite Nvidia’s efforts to supply retailers with daily shipments, some have reported limited initial stock. For instance, MSI has announced that RTX 5090 preorders will begin on January 30 at 6 AM PST, with a ship date of February 6, while the RTX 5080 will be available for immediate purchase on the same day.

The high demand is partly driven by the introduction of DLSS 4 technology, which uses AI to enhance gaming performance, allowing for higher resolutions and smoother gameplay. However, the limited availability has raised concerns about scalpers reselling the GPUs at inflated prices, making it even more challenging for gamers to obtain them.

Nvidia has acknowledged these concerns and is working to increase production to meet the demand. In the meantime, gamers are advised to monitor official retailer channels and act quickly to secure a unit. The RTX 5090 and 5080 will be available online and in physical stores such as Best Buy and Micro Center starting at 9 AM ET on January 30.

As the gaming community eagerly awaits these new GPUs, the combination of cutting-edge technology and limited availability has created a perfect storm of excitement and frustration. Whether you’re aiming to upgrade your current setup or build a new rig, staying informed and prepared will be key to navigating this high-demand launch.
