Tencent’s mobile MOBA game Honor of Kings has been crowned Google Play’s Best Game of 2024 for Southeast Asia. The recognition spans Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, highlighting the game’s rapid rise in popularity since its global launch in June. With over 50 million downloads in its first month, Honor of Kings has solidified its place as a global sensation, particularly in the competitive gaming scene.
Google Play praised the game for its engaging 5v5 gameplay and the emphasis on teamwork, which has captivated both casual players and hardcore gamers. The platform lauded Honor of Kings for its accessibility to beginners while still offering challenging mechanics to keep seasoned players invested. The accolade reflects the game’s ability to strike a balance between inclusivity and competitive depth.
Dean Huang, Director of Honor of Kings, expressed gratitude for the award and credited the passionate Southeast Asian community for embracing the game. He emphasized Tencent’s ongoing commitment to delivering localized content, making the game more relatable and culturally significant to players in the region. Notable campaigns include a collaboration with Malaysian badminton legend Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei, who was featured as an exclusive in-game skin. The developers also introduced a Silat-inspired skin, representing traditional martial arts for Malaysian and regional fans, while Indonesian players were invited to co-design the Garuda Khageswara hero, slated for a 2025 release.
The recognition of Honor of Kings wasn’t the only highlight of Google Play’s awards. Other winners include Clash of Clans as Best Multi-device Game 2024, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as Best Ongoing Game, AFK Journey as Best Game 2024, and Squad Busters as Best Multiplayer Game of 2024.
