Mark Zuckerberg, the mastermind behind Meta, recently shared a surprising claim at the Meta Connect 2024 conference—he believes no one in the world can beat him at the popular strategy game Civilization. During an interview with Pubity, Zuckerberg opened up about his passion for the game and hinted at taking his skills to a public platform: “In terms of strategy games, the one that I’m more likely to want to be the best in the world at is Civilization.”

While Zuckerberg didn’t specify which version of the game he’s most into, his confidence was undeniable. He even toyed with the idea of showcasing his gameplay on Twitch, saying, “I think at some point, I should do like a Twitch stream of me playing with someone. Because I’m pretty convinced that I’m close to grandmaster status. I’d be surprised if anyone in the world could beat me at that.”

His casual, light-hearted tone also carried into a story about his wife, Priscilla Chan, reacting to his playtime on Steam. “Priscilla looked at my Steam account the other day and she’s like: ‘What? You’ve played this for more than a thousand hours?'” Zuckerberg said with a laugh, revealing just how much time he’s dedicated to the game.

Civilization, developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games, has been a cornerstone of strategy gaming since the early 1990s. It challenges players to build vast empires, conquer enemies, and strategize over centuries of history. The series has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful strategy franchises ever. Interestingly, Zuckerberg’s fondness for the game goes way back; in his 2017 Harvard commencement speech, he mentioned receiving his college acceptance letter while playing Civilization.

The billionaire’s comments quickly stirred up excitement among the gaming community. Popular Civilization streamer PotatoMcWhiskey wasted no time issuing a challenge, publicly calling out Zuckerberg for a one-on-one duel in the game. “I challenge you, Mark Zuckerberg, to a 1v1 duel in Civilization,” PotatoMcWhiskey declared on his YouTube channel. Even the official Civilization Twitter account joined in, replying with, “See you in the arena, Zuckerberg.”

Zuckerberg’s statements couldn’t have come at a more interesting time. Alongside his remarks, the tech mogul made waves by sporting a black T-shirt with “Zuck or nothing” written in Latin, marking a slight shift from his usual minimalist look. This move seems to be part of a broader effort to reshape his public persona, offering glimpses of his life beyond just running a tech giant.
