Ubisoft Developing ‘Project Scout’: A New Battle Royale Inspired by Apex Legends

Ubisoft appears to be gearing up for a major return to the battle royale arena with a new project that’s reportedly heavily inspired by Apex Legends. The in-development game, currently codenamed Project Scout, has been under wraps for over two years but is now beginning to stir interest within the gaming community following a report from Insider Gaming.

According to early sources, Project Scout is Ubisoft’s ambitious attempt to craft a hero-based battle royale shooter, featuring a playable roster of characters with distinct abilities—much like Apex Legends. Insiders say some characters in the game bear striking similarities to popular Apex heroes such as Wraith, Lifeline, and Pathfinder. These character resemblances suggest that Ubisoft is leaning heavily into mobility mechanics, agility, and team-based strategy—hallmarks of Respawn’s successful formula.

What makes this development particularly intriguing is the context. While Apex Legends continues to maintain a strong player base, there’s chatter about a gradual decline in its momentum, and Ubisoft seems ready to fill that potential gap. One source reportedly told Insider Gaming that Ubisoft sees this as an opportunity to “capitalize” on that dip and believes there’s room in the market for another big-name title to thrive in the battle royale genre.

The game’s internal development has been discreet, but the similarities to Apex Legends have reportedly been so close that placeholder art from Apex was even used during early stages. While that’s not uncommon in prototyping, it does emphasize how directly the project is drawing inspiration.

This won’t be Ubisoft’s first dive into battle royale territory. Back in 2020, the company launched Hyper Scape, a fast-paced sci-fi battle royale with vertical movement and urban combat. Despite initial buzz, Hyper Scape struggled to maintain a player base and was officially shut down in 2022. With Project Scout, Ubisoft seems to be applying lessons learned from that experience, this time with a more refined and perhaps competitive vision tailored to current trends in the gaming landscape.

So far, no gameplay footage, screenshots, or release window for Project Scout have been made public. However, reports claim that development is well underway, and Ubisoft may be preparing to reveal more as part of an upcoming event or showcase.

The big question now is whether Ubisoft can truly make its mark in an already saturated genre. Titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG have solidified their positions, while others like Hunt: Showdown and Fall Guys have carved their own niches. With competition fierce and player expectations high, Ubisoft’s next move could determine whether Project Scout becomes a breakout success or another forgotten experiment.

As always, the battle royale space thrives on innovation, fun gameplay loops, and a strong community. If Ubisoft can deliver all three, Project Scout could become the next big thing.
