Sony Shuts Down Firewalk Studios After $400M Concord Flop—Ex-GTA Dev Calls It a “Missed Opportunity”

Con

In the wake of Concord’s unexpectedly brief and turbulent journey, former Grand Theft Auto developer Obbe Vermeij has spoken out about Sony’s decision to shutter Firewalk Studios just months after the game’s release. Sony had ambitious plans for Concord, envisioning the hero shooter as a potential flagship PlayStation IP. The game had been in development for an impressive eight years, backed by a staggering $400 million budget. Yet, despite the high stakes and hopes, Concord launched on August 23, 2024, with lackluster reviews and weak sales, moving only 15,000 units across PS5 and PC in its first week. Within days, Sony cut support, ended server access, and even issued refunds, leading to the full closure of Firewalk Studios on October 29.

Vermeij’s reaction to the shutdown reflects a wider concern in the industry about how major publishers manage their studio acquisitions, expressing that “It’s wasteful.” According to Vermeij, publishers often spend large sums to secure studios and develop titles, only to close them at the first sign of a commercial stumble. This practice, they argue, limits the chance for creative teams to learn, adapt, and eventually thrive. Vermeij pointed to Microsoft’s high-profile closure of Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin following its acquisition of ZeniMax Media. Though Krafton eventually stepped in to revive Tango Gameworks, the situation remains a troubling example of the fast pace at which studios are now dissolved.

These shutdowns reflect a shift in the gaming industry, where pressure to produce successful blockbuster titles has never been higher. With publishers quick to abandon projects that fail to make an immediate impact, game developers increasingly face uncertainty—even within high-budget, well-funded studios. Vermeij’s comments echo a sentiment widely shared among developers who fear that the industry’s volatility and rapid-fire pace of shutdowns can prevent great ideas from being fully realized.

As Concord fades from the PlayStation lineup, Vermeij hopes Firewalk’s talent finds new opportunities to continue their work in the industry. Amid ongoing layoffs and closures, their story serves as a cautionary tale about the pressures facing game studios today, reminding fans and developers alike of the challenges within the constantly evolving world of game development.
