The first major system software update for the PS5 console has been announced to roll out globally. As per Sony, the update is packed with new features and improvements.
The new update will enable users to transfer their PS5 games to USB extended storage from their console’s internal storage. This extends the storage capabilities of their PS5 console, as well as lets them seamlessly copy their PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when they’re ready to play. The company mentioned that it is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.
However, since PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. Though, games that users transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. Besides, they can also select which game modes they want to install for select titles that support the option.
Moreover, as the company previously announced, the PS5 console will support storage expansion via M.2 drives soon. Sony mentioned that they are currently working on this feature.
Besides this, Sony also announced new social features for PS4 and PS5 Consoles, including Cross-generation Share Play and the “Request to Join” option. With the Cross-generation Share Play, PS4 and PS5 players may now Share Play together while chatting at parties.
This means PS5 console users can let their friends on PS4 consoles view their game screen or try out the PS5 games through Share Play and the other way around. Options include the ability to share the screen with a friend, pass the controller virtually to a friend, or pass a second controller virtually to play co-op games together. On the other hand, the Request to Join option serves as a shortcut to sending a game invite. Through the Privacy Settings menu, users can also modify who can interact with them through parties, games, and messages.
Other improvements to expect for PS5 consoles include the following:
• Improved game base
• Disable game chat or adjust players’ volume
• Game update pre-download
• Customize game library
• Screen zoom
• New trophy settings and stats screen
What’s more, the company also introduces a myriad of new features for the PlayStation App. Recently, they introduced the ability to save products in a wishlist, get notifications when friends are online, and change console online status. Now, they will be rolling out more, including the ability to join a multiplayer session on PS5 from the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products shown in the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation App is free to download from Google Play and the App Store.
