Roblox, one of the most popular online platforms for gamers, has found itself in hot water over accusations of inflating its player count. This controversy comes on the heels of reports detailing the company’s significant financial losses, despite its claims of steady player growth. A recent investigation suggests that Roblox may have overstated its user data, potentially misleading investors about how engaged its community really is.

Roblox has long been a digital playground where players and developers come together, especially appealing to younger audiences. Over the years, it’s become a massive social hub, but a report from Hindenburg Research, published via Eurogamer, is questioning the accuracy of the company’s numbers. According to the report, Roblox could be inflating its daily active user (DAU) numbers by as much as 25-42%, while engagement hours might be exaggerated by a whopping 100%.

Are Roblox’s Metrics Misleading?

Hindenburg’s analysis points to some questionable methods in how Roblox calculates its DAUs. One key issue is the possibility of users managing multiple accounts, which Roblox admits could be included in its DAU totals. This means that the platform might be presenting a more active player base than it truly has, raising red flags for investors and advertising partners.

The report also challenges the average time Roblox claims users spend on the platform—around 2.4 hours per day. Hindenburg compared this to a 2021 study, which showed that children aged 8 to 12 spend significantly less time on mobile games, suggesting that Roblox’s numbers could be overblown by 58%. To make matters worse, the presence of bots, both player-created and available for purchase, complicates the accuracy of these engagement statistics.

Former Employees Weigh In

Interestingly, former Roblox employees shared with Hindenburg that the company may be more aware of duplicate accounts than it lets on. Roblox, however, has publicly claimed that it can’t track when a player is using multiple accounts, a stance that has only fueled further suspicion.

This discrepancy could distort the platform’s performance metrics, giving the impression that more users are engaged than there really are. And with so much riding on these numbers—advertising revenue, investor confidence, and market growth—the stakes are high for Roblox.

Roblox Responds and Investors React

Roblox has, unsurprisingly, pushed back against the allegations, calling the report “simply misleading.” But the damage may have already been done. Following the report’s release, Roblox’s stock dropped by 4.6%, signaling that investors are taking these accusations seriously. If the claims prove true, Roblox’s ability to attract advertisers could take a hit, further impacting its already struggling financial situation.

Lower player counts and fewer engagement hours mean advertising space on Roblox becomes less valuable. This, in turn, could lead to further revenue losses for the company, which is already dealing with financial setbacks.
