Big changes are on the horizon for League of Legends players in Southeast Asia. Riot Games has officially announced the merging of its SEA servers, a decision that’s been more than a decade in the making. Starting January 9, 2025, servers from Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia will unite under one regional server.
Riot broke the news via a press release on November 26, highlighting their goal to create a smoother, faster, and more connected experience for players across the region. “We wanted to create the best possible experience for every game you play and bring more players across the region together,” Riot explained.
The server merge is expected to significantly improve matchmaking and reduce queue times—a common frustration for players on smaller, fragmented servers. Riot is also centralizing its infrastructure to ensure low-latency gameplay, an upgrade that’s likely to excite both casual players and the competitive scene.
The transition will coincide with the rollout of Patch 15.1. Riot promises that account migrations will preserve nearly everything, from your Riot ID and skins to in-game progress like honor levels and champion mastery. However, not everything will make the jump. Victory Points, Forum Badges, Clash match history, and club affiliations from the Thailand and Philippines servers won’t be transferred.
The server downtime for this process is expected to last about four hours, a minor inconvenience for what could be a major boost to gameplay quality.
This isn’t just about server logistics—it’s about addressing long-standing issues that players have raised since the servers were launched in partnership with Garena in 2010. Fragmented player bases meant longer queue times and less competitive matchmaking. With the merge, the larger player pool will help Riot deliver a more dynamic and enjoyable experience.
As SEA players gear up for this transition, the League of Legends community is buzzing with anticipation. Will this long-awaited unification mark the start of a new era for LoL in the region? We’ll find out in 2025!
