GTA 6 Frame Rate Concerns Surface Ahead of 2025 Launch

The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is reaching fever pitch as the gaming community braces for its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S later this year. However, recent rumors suggest that the highly awaited sequel might not run at the smooth 60 frames per second (FPS) that many gamers expect from current-gen consoles.

Mike York, a former animator at Rockstar Games, has stirred the pot with his candid insights during an interview with Kiwi Talkz, as reported by GamesRadar. York expressed skepticism about the developers’ ability to achieve a consistent 60 FPS in GTA 6, hinting that the game might instead aim for a stable 30 FPS to ensure performance doesn’t drop below that mark. “They might be shooting for 30 FPS to keep the gameplay experience smooth and consistent,” York explained.

Rockstar Games confirmed GTA 6’s development in 2022, and since then, fans have been eagerly tracking every update. The release of the first trailer in December 2023 only amplified the excitement, but it also fueled various speculations and theories about what the next installment would bring. While GTA 6 is set to deliver an expansive open-world experience, the potential frame rate limitation has raised questions about its overall performance on modern consoles.

Historically, Rockstar has balanced performance and visual fidelity in their games. GTA 5, despite being over a decade old, still supports 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, offering a smoother experience than its original release. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, another Rockstar masterpiece, remains capped at 30 FPS even seven years post-launch. This pattern suggests that Rockstar may prioritize stable performance over higher frame rates, especially in their sprawling, resource-intensive titles.

York didn’t dismiss the possibility of GTA 6 reaching higher frame rates on PC. He noted that the game would likely benefit from the more powerful hardware and optimization capabilities available on PC platforms, potentially allowing it to achieve 60 FPS there. “With the right optimization and powerful GPUs, GTA 6 on PC could very well hit that 60 FPS benchmark,” he added.

Despite the concerns, many fans remain optimistic. The allure of exploring GTA 6’s new settings, engaging in intricate missions, and experiencing the next evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series may outweigh frame rate considerations for most players. Rockstar’s dedication to delivering a compelling and immersive gaming experience ensures that GTA 6 will continue to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.

As the launch date approaches, Rockstar Games has yet to comment on these rumors, leaving the community to speculate. Gamers eagerly await official confirmations and hope that GTA 6 will meet their high expectations both visually and performance-wise. Until then, the debate over frame rates adds an extra layer of intrigue to the already highly anticipated sequel.
