Fortnite introduces Ballistic, a tactical 5v5 first-person mode

Fortnite is evolving its gameplay with the introduction of “Ballistic,” a first-person, 5v5 competitive mode launching in Early Access on Dec. 11, 2024. The mode emphasizes strategic planning, teamwork, and individual skill, marking a fresh approach to Fortnite’s iconic Battle Royale format.

In Ballistic, players are divided into Attackers or Defenders, aiming to either plant a Rift Point Device—designed to tear reality—or prevent the opposing team from doing so. Each round is a high-stakes battle, as there are no respawns. Victory is achieved when the Rift Point Device detonates 45 seconds after planting or if one team eliminates the other. The game continues until one team wins seven rounds, with roles swapping every six rounds.

Matches start with players equipped with a Ranger Pistol and 800 Credits. Additional credits are earned through kills or completing objectives, such as planting the Rift Point Device. Credits are spent on upgraded weapons and items between rounds, allowing for tailored strategies. Players retain their equipment if they survive a round, though consumable items do not carry over. However, weapons and grenades can be shared among teammates or looted from fallen foes.

To further diversify tactics, players can equip up to two Flex Gadgets—unique tools that cannot be dropped or picked up by others. The five available gadgets at launch include:

  • Proximity Mine: Booby-trap locations with mines that can damage unsuspecting opponents.
  • Bubble Shield: Deploy a temporary bulletproof dome for protection.
  • Recon Grenade: Detect and mark enemy locations, even through walls.
  • Frag Grenade: Classic explosive for flushing enemies out of cover.
  • Impulse Grenade: Propel players or teammates for creative maneuvers.

Ballistic will debut with one map, Skyline 10, and a curated set of weapons and gadgets, with additional content promised post-launch. Players can choose between Unranked and Ranked modes. In Unranked matches, teammates can backfill if players leave, while Ranked games penalize quitters with a rank penalty and temporary matchmaking ban. Ranked gameplay balances matchmaking based on party rank and rewards performance based on rounds won, eliminations, and assists.

This addition is part of Fortnite’s broader efforts to diversify its gameplay offerings and appeal to fans of tactical shooters. With its innovative mechanics and Fortnite’s signature flair, Ballistic aims to carve its niche in competitive gaming.
