Did you know that the project has been in the works since 2014? Warner Bros. Pictures faced a bit of a rollercoaster ride with this one. The film changed directors multiple times, with notable names like Shawn Levy (from Deadpool and Wolverine) and Rob McElhenney (of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) attached at various points. But things really started to gain traction when director Jared Hess, known for Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, signed on. Filming officially kicked off in New Zealand in January 2024, and with Jack Black as Steve, the player character, and Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks joining the cast, it feels like we’re in for a treat.

The first trailer, which dropped in September, sparked some mixed feelings among fans. Many were unsure about the live-action approach to the Minecraft universe. However, during Minecraft Live 2024 on YouTube, the new clip gave us a closer look at the crafting system that’s so integral to the game. In this scene, Steve gathers his friends around a crafting table to show them how it’s done. He explains that by placing materials in specific patterns and giving them a good whack with a hammer, they can create amazing new items. He forges a sword that impresses Henry (played by Sebastian Eugene Hansen). Not to be outdone, Garrett (Momoa) tries to craft his own sword but hilariously ends up making a bucket instead. Steve laughs it off and reassures him, “That’s OK, bud. Buckets are useful here!”

During the event, Hess and Torfi Frans Olafsson, the Creative Director of Entertainment at Mojang Studios, chatted about how they adapted the game’s mechanics for the movie. “We had to honor what you experience in the game but also make it work for human scale,” Hess explained. Olafsson added, “We honor the three-by-three grid perfectly, and thought it would be cool, fun, and gratifying to just give it a massive whack and then have things appear.”

Crafting is such a core part of Minecraft gameplay, so it’s no surprise that it’s a key element of the film’s plot. The story follows Momoa, Hansen, Myers, and Brooks as they play four misfit characters, each facing their own challenges. Their lives take a turn when they find themselves in the Overworld, a magical cubic realm. Under Steve’s guidance, they embark on a journey to rediscover their unique skills and overcome their struggles.

Despite the buzz, not everyone is on board with the film’s visual style. Some fans are concerned that the transition from Minecraft’s bright, blocky graphics to realistic CGI hasn’t quite hit the mark. Olafsson acknowledged this, noting that the team had some deep discussions about what direction to take for the adaptation. Ultimately, they decided to go with live-action because “it’s not something that’s been seen before on this scale.”

As we count down the days, fans will have to wait until April 4, 2025, to see A Minecraft Movie hit theaters. With promises of adventure, creativity, and a fresh take on the beloved game, it’s bound to capture the hearts of both longtime Minecraft players and newcomers alike.
