Build A Rocket Boy, the innovative game development studio led by legendary game director Leslie Benzies, has announced the acquisition of PlayFusion, a renowned UK-based game developer and publisher. This strategic move is set to amplify Build A Rocket Boy’s mission to redefine immersive gaming experiences and accelerate the development of its groundbreaking projects.
The partnership merges two visionary studios, each celebrated for their creative contributions to the gaming world. Build A Rocket Boy is currently developing three flagship projects: MindsEye, a AAA narrative-driven action thriller; EVERYWHERE, an open-world platform blending gaming and entertainment; and ARCADIA, a suite of accessible AAA UGC (user-generated content) design and publishing tools. These ambitious projects aim to empower players to craft their own high-quality gaming experiences.
Mark Gerhard, CEO & CTO of PlayFusion, will now step into the role of Co-CEO at Build A Rocket Boy, working alongside Benzies. Gerhard, a veteran in the gaming industry with an impressive track record, previously served as CEO of Jagex, the studio behind the Guinness World Record-holding MMO RuneScape. His extensive expertise in game development and business growth will play a pivotal role in expanding Build A Rocket Boy’s presence in the gaming and entertainment sectors.
Leslie Benzies, known for his transformative contributions to the gaming industry, expressed his excitement about the partnership. “PlayFusion’s creativity and innovative approach to transmedia entertainment align perfectly with our vision,” he said. “By joining forces, we’ll empower players to create AAA-quality games and unique online experiences with ease.”
Gerhard echoed this enthusiasm, stating, “This collaboration marks a significant moment for the gaming industry. Together, we’re poised to democratize premium game development, offering players the tools to create exceptional content while redefining the boundaries of what’s possible.”
The acquisition comes on the heels of a successful $110 million Series D funding round in January 2024, led by RedBird Capital Partners, with participation from major investors like NetEase Games, Galaxy Interactive, and Endeavor. Julia Wittlin, a partner at RedBird Capital, praised the merger, highlighting how PlayFusion’s technical and creative strengths align seamlessly with Build A Rocket Boy’s innovative ethos. “This partnership is a major step forward in pushing the boundaries of immersive entertainment,” Wittlin said.
Founded in 2016 by Benzies, Build A Rocket Boy has consistently pursued a bold vision of delivering compelling and interactive gaming experiences. With PlayFusion’s nearly two decades of expertise and a shared passion for empowering players, this acquisition sets the stage for the studios to lead the next chapter in gaming innovation.
As the gaming industry evolves, this merger signals a promising shift toward player-driven creativity and next-generation immersive entertainment. All eyes are now on what Build A Rocket Boy and PlayFusion will deliver in their upcoming projects, promising to reshape how we experience games.
