Early this year, ASUS ROG released two gaming laptops powered by NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050/1050ti GPUs, and we had the chance to check out one of them. Here’s our first impressions on the beefy ROG Strix GL753VE.
Right out of the box, the Republic of Gamers branding is very prominent. All the cosmetic design cues definitely have the typical gaming aesthetic. In terms of pure form factor, it is actually quite sleek and polished, as opposed to a more aggressive look that gaming hardware is typically associated with. It’s not too hefty for a gaming laptop, and is quite portable. The 17.3-inch non-glare IPS Full HD display is gorgeous, providing nice viewing angles and good details and colors.
The lid has a faux brushed aluminum finish which looks quite nice, and is accentuated by two red lines, and the ROG logo. These accents are quite strange as they do have LEDs to make them glow, but aren’t made of translucent red plastic – they’re much more like red neon. They do look very nice when lit up, however.
Though not tactile like a mechanical, the keyboard on the Strix has quite a bit of springiness to it. Thanks to its raised keys, each full press has a travel distance of 2.5mm. It features RGB backlighting, allowing you to customize the keys across four zones according to your liking. Typing overall was not a great experience, as the keys felt mushy. We’ll have to see in our full review how it translates in gaming usage. The trackpad is smooth and your fingers easily glide across.

Being a gaming laptop, it is more ideal though to use a separate mouse, rather than the touchpad. The Strix comes with a Sica gaming mouse. It looks decent with its silver top and red LED ROG logo, and does the job as a basic mouse.
I/O is good and gives you some nice options. On the right, you get an 8x DVD optical drive, and two USB ports – one 2.0, one 3.0. The left side houses two more USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, and Ethernet ports.
Under the hood, powering the laptop, is the star of the show. The Strix GL753VE is powered by an Intel Core-i7 7700HQ and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB of GDDR5 VRAM. Our unit came with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, but you can expand this all the way to 32GB. For storage, it has a 128GB SATA3 SSD for the OS and Programs, as well as a 2.5-inch 1TB 5400RPM HDD. When unplugged, it runs on a 48Whrs battery.
Given the specs, this gaming laptop should be able to comfortably play modern AAA titles at 1080p 60fps, high settings. Stay tuned for our review.
