The Witcher 4: Console Gamers Won’t Have to Wait

As CD Projekt Red gears up for The Witcher 4—or Project Polaris as it’s known for now—the developer has some good news for console gamers. While fans are still waiting for concrete details, a recent interview has hinted that The Witcher 4 will likely be released on both consoles and PC simultaneously, rather than a PC-first launch.

Not much is known about the highly anticipated RPG, other than it’s being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and that CD Projekt Red has big ambitions for it. The game is still in development, and more details are expected to surface as the release date draws nearer.

In a recent conversation with Eurogamer, Charles Tremblay, Vice President of Technology at CD Projekt Red, discussed the launch strategy for The Witcher 4. While there had been discussions about a PC-only release, Tremblay made it clear that this wasn’t a direction the studio wanted to pursue. “Most likely, the game will not have a PC-only launch,” he confirmed. While he didn’t rule out the possibility of staggered releases across platforms, it seems The Witcher 4 will likely be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when it launches.

Tremblay’s statement may come as a relief to console players, especially considering how Cyberpunk 2077’s console launch was marred by technical issues. In comparison, the PC version of Cyberpunk had a far smoother experience for players with high-end rigs, though it still faced its own share of challenges. A simultaneous launch for The Witcher 4 would help avoid the backlash that a PC-first release could trigger, especially for those on consoles who are eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the Witcher saga.

While it’s clear that The Witcher 4 will be a major cross-platform release, Tremblay did leave room for speculation, mentioning that the game might not launch on every available platform, such as the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. So while PS5 and Xbox Series X are likely safe bets, it’s still uncertain where else the game will land at launch.

Ultimately, fans can likely expect a smooth, simultaneous release for The Witcher 4 on PC and consoles when the game hits shelves. As for the exact release date and any surprises that might be in store, we’ll just have to wait and see.
