Capcom is diving deep into its treasure chest of beloved franchises, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled. At The Game Awards 2024, the publisher surprised audiences with the announcements of a new Okami sequel and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. But that’s not all—Capcom has made it clear this is just the beginning of a larger strategy to bring back dormant IPs while continuing to release new titles each year.
In an official press release, Capcom outlined its ambitious plans, saying it is “focusing on reactivating dormant IPs” to make use of its rich library of beloved content. The company emphasized its commitment to delivering “highly efficient, high-quality titles” to enhance its value and keep fans engaged for years to come.
The announcement of Okami 2—referred to as the Okami sequel project—marks a long-awaited return for the fan-favorite series. Hideki Kamiya, the original game’s director, is back to lead the project. For context, Okami first launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2006 and was celebrated for its beautiful art style and unique gameplay inspired by Japanese mythology. The series saw a handheld follow-up in 2010 with Okamiden for the Nintendo DS, but there hadn’t been much news since. Although Capcom hasn’t shared a release window yet, the announcement alone has already sparked excitement.
On the other hand, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is officially slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This is the first major entry in the series since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams for the PS2. The Onimusha series has a strong following thanks to its samurai action gameplay and atmospheric storytelling, and its return after nearly two decades feels like a win for fans of classic Capcom titles.
Interestingly, this isn’t Capcom’s first hint at reviving its older franchises. Back in 2019, the company revealed its interest in re-exploring dormant series, and earlier this year, they reassured fans that Mega Man hasn’t been forgotten. While the Blue Bomber hasn’t yet made his return, Capcom’s renewed focus on legacy IPs suggests that even more beloved classics could see the light of day in the near future.
For now, the spotlight shines brightly on Okami 2 and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, as Capcom leans into nostalgia while continuing to innovate. Whether it’s bringing back long-lost favorites or launching brand-new titles, Capcom seems determined to keep both new and longtime fans eagerly anticipating what’s next.
